Hey Ho Kombucha

When asked what I think the healthiest drink is besides water, I automatically think of tea. How can you make tea even more health packing than it already is? You ferment it with cultures the result is called Kombucha. You’ve heard about it. You’ve seen it at Whole Foods or any other local organic shop. But what is it really?

If you saw what they called the “mother, you might freak out and not want to drink kombucha again. That’s why it is good to actually know what it is and where is comes from.

The large “mushroom” is also known as a SCOBY. SCOBY is actually an acronym for “Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast”. Don’t worry, it’s all good bacteria. The yeast component of kombucha is what gives it the sizzly carbonated feel when you drink it. Some brands are stronger than others. The strains of bacteria in the SCOBY ferment the alcohols that are produced by the yeast. Don’t worry, you aren’t really breaking edge by drinking kombucha.

The reason kombucha and any other drink would stick out to me would be the health claims. I am not all that attracted to a cola drink if it is up against a bottle of tea or a “green machine” drink. This all started when my dad was diagnosed with lung cancer and I was trying for find things that were more beneficial to his health other than his usual coffee. Don’t get me wrong, coffee does have a few benefits, but I come to find tea has more. I can save that debate for another article altogether. In my research, I come to find that kombucha’s main benefit is its detoxifying properties. This makes sense since this is the one beverage I crave after I have had a day of eating not so well. I want something that will cleanse and refresh me. The enzymes and bacteria in kombucha is said to cleanse and unload the junk that is in your liver. Studies have also showed that it can help prevent some kinds of cancer. So who would not want to drink this stuff everyday? Another thing that is important to me is the probiotics factor. Probiotics are said to improve your digestive system, fight over active yeast formation (candida), and general health. Also, probiotics are said to help with anxiety and depression. Instead of taking tiny caples everyday, I would enjoy a tasty beverage like this. Rich in antioxidants and so much more.

I covered all the health benefits, but what about the flavor? I don’t think anyone would drink something that tastes like dirt even if it was good for you. Don’t worry, kombucha tastes far from terrible. I will say, with some people the taste needs to grow on them since it does have a vinegar-ish flavor at first. Some folks go for more of a traditional flavored kombucha while others venture out into the fruit varieties. I personally take a liking towards strawberry and sometimes the original flavor when I am feeling like I need something less sweet. Recently, I have even come across a brand that put chia seeds in thiers. It had almost a smoothie texture. There are some brands that are stronger while some are more on the bland side. You will have to experiment and poke around different stores to find which ones you love or hate. Here are some examples!

Synergy Drinks – Grape Chia

Strawberry Serenity

Raspberry

Wonder Drink- Niagara Grape

Nessalla- Raspberry

Lemongrass Ginger

Celestial Seasonings

Tonica

Kombucha 2000- Blueberry

Grape

The other option of course is to make your own! I have many friends who have ventured in that direction and I hope to follow suit someday soon. The trick is to either find someone who has their own SCOBY you can borrow or to order one. The tricky thing is, for freshness, she had to order the SCOBY after receiving the main kit. Poke around and find which kit is suited for your needs!

ReLove Plan.et

Here is an interview I did with the creator of ReLove Plan.et, Bianca Storm. Check it out!

Hi Bianca! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and Relove Planet?

I’m a free-spirited, optimistic, tree-hugging, ecoholic always looking to make the most of life. I believe in living in the moment, taking chances, and stepping out of your comfort zone to try new things. ReLove Plan.et is pretty much the birth of all my beliefs. I came from a dark place in my life and totally turned my life around and I believe that anybody can do the same. ReLove Plan.et is a place to show people they can be happy, how to improve their lives, be good to earth, and be good to animals. I write about things that matter (in my opinion). People particular love my sunday recipes and Motivational Monday posts.

How long have you been vegan? What made you pick that lifestyle?

I always have a hard time tracing it back, but I’ve been vegan for about 4 years. I turned to vegetarianism first, because I had started to eat organically and healthier, and knew that being vegetarian was better for my health. From there, I discovered the truth about the meat and dairy industries and I just felt that I couldn’t ignore any of it. I hadn’t realized how incredibly cruel the industries were, disconnecting myself as many do from the reality. When my eyes were opened I couldn’t ignore it anymore. I wish that someone had opened my eyes sooner which is why I like to openly share information with others.

What is PMA? How do you keep that kind of attitude even on a bad day?

PMA= Positive Mental Attitude. It’s about maintaining a positive attitude no matter what is going on in your life. When you are able to always look for the positive in any situation (because there is ALWAYS something positive to be found) then your whole world brightens. The downs become easier and you welcome more good things into your life.

I see the bad days now as opportunities, extra practice to work on maintaining that positive attitude–which is just one lovely way of looking at any situation positively. I’m now in the habit of catching a bad day before it happens, because if you don’t take a moment to make yourself feel better then the day will almost always spiral downwards. I just stop and do things to make myself feel better, like dancing, smiling, laughing out loud, reading something positive or helpful, and taking a moment to breathe. But the most powerful tool I’ve learned is to remember that I always always have a Choice to feel good and that choice and responsibility is mine alone.

How did you learn about PMA?

The idea of having a positive attitude came kind of naturally. I’d read a lot of inspiring books that all taught some basic principles so I picked up a similar practice from those books without ever having heard of the term “PMA.” The first time I heard the actual term “PMA” was from Jetta Vegas who runs her own lovely positive blog now over at the Radical Uprise. After that I gained a deeper understanding of the practice and the power of using that positivity on a daily basis. This also lead me to learn about the Law of Attraction which, to me, is just as important as maintaining PMA.

Are you working on any new projects?

I’m always working on new projects, I’m a very busy bee. I recently opened up my new etsy shop (www.reloveplanet.etsy.com) with my artwork printed on shirts, necklaces, and other goodies. I’m still working on my new jewelry line and new Spring and Summer collections for Alter-Eco Clothing. I’ve also been doing a lot of collaborations, giveaways, and product reviews for lots of vegan companies which is always exciting.

Anything else you would like to add?

As I said at the beginning, Anyone can make their lives truly beautiful and feel genuine happiness and I truly deeply want to spread that message to others. Because once you start to love yourself, you start to treat everything else around you with love and respect and your whole life becomes rather magical.
